Fisheries assessment of the Mousam River was begun in May 2009, using a variety of sampling methods (fyke nets, cast nets, visual assessment, and hook and line). Five species of diadromous fish were observed including American shad, alewife, blueback herring, striped bass, and American eel. All nekton species (fish and macrocrustaceans) were recorded to describe the nekton community and improve understanding of estuarine condition and food web structure. After recording species ID, total length and weight, all fish were released, save for a few voucher specimens. The fisheries assessment was an important first step in pre-restoration monitoring and has paved the way for the continued surveys.
